The Role and Department
The Department is one of the UK's leading Computer Science departments, with an outstanding reputation in research, teaching, and student employability. Our internationally recognised research covers Algorithms and Complexity, Artificial Intelligence and Human Systems, Networks, Scientific Computing and Vision, Imaging and Visualisation. There is a lively research culture with many visitors and events, and active and rewarding collaborations with other departments in Durham and with other scientists in the UK and internationally. In the recent assessment exercise REF2021 we improved by six places in the ranking. We aim to provide an encouraging and friendly environment with a strong sense of community. The Department has recently grown rapidly, and now has more than 55 permanent members of academic staff. In 2021, we moved to a newly constructed building, which we share with Mathematics.

The Department has a proud tradition of delivering excellence in its undergraduate programmes through research-led teaching. Attracting some of the best students in the UK, the Department is in Top 10 according to the Complete University Guide 2025 and the Guardian University Guide 2024. As part of the expansion of the Department, new MSc programmes in Business Analytics, Scientific Computing and Data Analysis, and in Data Science launched within the past five years.

The Department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award. Athena SWAN is a national initiative that recognises the advancement of gender equality, representation, progression and success for all in academia.

The post holder will be affiliated with the SYSTEMS subgroup of Network Engineering Science and Theory in Durham (NESTiD) research group in the Department of Computer Science. NESTiD (nestid.webspace.durham.ac.uk) is a vibrant and fast-growing research group established in 2020 with the mandate of studying the ubiquitous theme of Networks in every form. Additionally, the researcher will also be associated with the Durham Smart Grid Laboratory. Currently the laboratory has over 20 researchers and is a leading research facility that brings together advanced simulation tools, realistic emulators, and innovative testbeds to revolutionise smart grid research and development.

The Role

Applications are invited for this Postdoctoral Research Associate post funded by EPSRC, VPP-WARD Project and partly by the CHEDDAR: Communications Hub for Empowering Distributed ClouD Computing Applications and Research project aims to empower distributed cloud computing applications and develop innovative research ideas to drive research and networking across the UK academic community. The role will involve working on the scalable data frameworks, with a particular interest in (but not limited to) Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twins for connected communities within smart grids. To conduct this research project, you will:

  • Specialised AI tools running on big data processing systems empower the development and refinement of advanced algorithms for optimal grid management, renewable energy forecasting, and adaptive decision-making.
  • Enable autonomous configuration, orchestration, and composition of AI pipelines and their integration within Digital Twins for resilient grid operations.
  • Scalable Data Processing Frameworks and their integration within edge-cloud continuum to support smart grid data demands.
  • Understanding of specialised monitoring tools and auto-diagnostic mechanism for analysing anomalies and resource dependencies within distributed edge computing.
  • Evaluation of communication protocols and cybersecurity measures for secure and reliable smart grid operation.

The post holder will be responsible for integrating these solutions and their applications in next generation communication paradigms and will be expected to primarily support Dr Gagangeet Aujla and Dr Anish Jindal and other project investigators within VPP-WARD and CHEDDAR teams. The post holder will proactively engage with academic, other postdoctoral research and technical support colleagues, as well as students, within and external to the Department, including industry, to ensure that activities are undertaken to an appropriate standard.

Key responsibilities:

  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include, research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Project Lead and Co-leads.
  • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Project Lead and Co-leads.
  • To work with the Project lead and other Co-leads in the VPP-WARD and CHEDDAR projects, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Project Lead and Co-leads and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
  • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
  • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
  • To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students.
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.
  • To attend conferences, workshops, seminars, summer schools and other dissemination activities for promoting the development of novel technologies, engaging with wider communities, and accelerating the impact of research outputs.

This post is fixed term until 31st January 2026 because the project is time-limited, however, likely to be extended subject to the approval from the funding agency.

The post-holder is employed to work on the EPSRC projects VPP-WARD and CHEDDAR . Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Essential Criteria:

Qualifications

  1. A good first degree in [Computer Science, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematical Sciences or related field].
  2. A PhD (or be close to submission) in [Computer Science, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering] or a related subject.

Experience

  1. Experience in conducting high quality academic research.
  2. Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals.
  3. Demonstrable ability to present research papers at [international] conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
  4. Experience in [smart grid and virtual power plants, AI algorithms, big data processing platforms, edge and cloud computing, digital twins, and cyber physical systems].

Skills

  1. Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
  2. Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria:

Experience

  1. Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
  2. A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career.
  3. Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics.
  4. Experience of overseeing students with respect to the development of their practical/research skills e.g. acting as a demonstrator; supervising student projects/practicals.
  5. Experience in [AI tools, software programming (Python, Matlab, etc.), simulators (Digital Twins, Big data processing, etc), and real-time hardware-based testbeds].

Skills
