Job Description

Prison Custody Officer – Escort Duties

Are you a former member of the UK Armed Forces, Blue Light Services, or Prison Service looking for flexible, meaningful work that fits around your existing commitments?

Sangfroid Group is proud to be partnering with Mitie Care & Custody, the operator of HMP Millsike, to deliver an innovative and pioneering operational support model within the UK prison estate. This exciting collaboration has been created to bring greater operational agility and a highly professional external capability to support the safe and effective running of one of the country’s newest prisons.

We are seeking exceptional individuals with sound judgement, professionalism, and integrity to join a carefully selected cohort delivering escorting duties and other operational support tasks outside the prison environment. Working on a flexible, task-based basis, successful candidates will play a vital role in supporting prison operations for HMP Millsike, near York.

Role overview:

As a Prison Custody Officer you will be supporting secure prisoner escort duties in locations near to the prison.

The role will involve escorting individuals safely between prisons, courts, medical appointments and other approved locations, alongside bed-watching duties at hospital sites.

The role requires individuals who are calm under pressure, confident in managing challenging situations, and able to maintain high standards of professionalism, decency, security and care at all times.

Please note candidates will be required to complete high level security vetting.

What we offer:

All relevant training to Prison Custody Officer competence, fully paid, lasting 7 weeks (Monday to Friday)
Flexible work and rotation patterns to allow candidates to work as little or as much to fit their schedule.

Working pattern and Flexibility:

We recognise that different people are looking for different ways of working, so we offer two options:

Regular Rotational Work

  • Ideal for those seeking more routine and predictable hours.
  • Typically involves working 2–3 weeks each month on a rotational basis.
  • Deployments can last up to five consecutive days at a time.

Flexible Contingent Work

  • Ideal if you prefer greater flexibility.
  • Support ad hoc operational requirements around your existing commitments.
  • Typically involves working several days each month, allowing you to supplement your current income while maintaining flexibility.

What we will need from you:

  • Ability to commute to the York area for training and operational hours (the prison is located in a rural area so access to your own transport is essential)
  • UK passport holder
  • 5 years’ service in HM Armed Forces or Blue Light Services.
  • Service Discharge (honorable discharge)
  • Demonstrable experience in the security sector (military, police or private)
  • A commitment to complete the training and required vetting.

Personal qualities:

  • The ability to balance a clear commitment to safety with reassurance and dignity.
  • Patience, professionalism and adaptability.
